Dried cocoa leaves provide a unique touch of nature in your terrarium or aquarium! They can be used as a natural substrate, providing a comfortable and realistic ground cover in a vivarium, and add beneficial nutrients and shelter for aquatic critters.

Leaf litter serves a dual purpose in enhancing the naturalistic look of your terrarium, while also offering hiding spaces for creatures like dart frogs, toads, and small reptiles. Decomposing leaves also become a food source for microfauna such as springtails and isopods. Additionally, cocoa leaves release tannic & humic acids, protecting tank inhabitants against bacteria and fungi.

When going for a natural look in a bioactive setup, it's recommended to maintain a substantial depth of leaves and regularly supplement them as they break down. This mimics the natural forest environment, where leaf litter can be quite thick.

These leaves are also great for black water aquariums! Not only do they possess pH-buffering qualities, but they also release tannins into the water as they (slowly) decompose. In addition to these perks, cocoa leaves provide shelter to small fish and shrimp.

Cocoa leaves have quite the size range, and can measure from 4.5 inches to almost 2 feet long! Most sold by Josh’s Frogs will max out around 15 inches in length, and 5 to 6 inches at their widest point. As these leaves are natural products, the color and size may vary, adding to the authenticity and charm of your terrarium.
