One of the top factors to consider when buying a pickleball paddle is its weight. Pickleball paddles generally weigh between 6 and 14 oz, with the majority ranging between 7 and 9 oz. Heavier paddles generate more power, while lighter paddles lend more control and maneuverability around the net.
The construction of a pickleball paddle will affect its performance and overall feel. While some wood paddles still exist, most paddles today feature carbon fiber (graphite) or composite for its lighter weight. Carbon fiber provides great control, while fiberglass composite boosts power.
There are many pickleball paddle shapes, but three broad categories exist: wide, classic and long. Wide paddles are shorter but more forgiving with generous sweet spots. Long paddles provide better reach but are more difficult to control. Paddles cannot exceed 24” combined for length and width.
